Kamaal Malak’s long list of accomplishments as a musician and producer directly reflects his desire to create music with integrity without regard for convention and genre. Recently, Kamaal produced and musically directed the Hands On Atlanta Benefit Concert featuring Patti LaBelle and John Legend. He is also featured in Forbes magazine detailing his venture with Banshee Music, a sports branding & publishing company. In 2010, Kamaal composed the theme song for the Atlanta Falcons and contributed a song for the Churchill Downs Kentucky Derby, both of which are available on iTunes.
Before his work with Banshee Music, Kamaal’s most notable success came when he joined Grammy award winning music group, Arrested Development. Kamaal admits that his personal highlights while part of Arrested Development came with the opportunities to perform: with Peter Gabriel on his WOMAD Tour, at Woodstock 94’ and on The Late Show with David Letterman. Kamaal also performed for Nelson Mandella in South Africa.
Kamaal first discovered and continued to hone his talents in his hometown of Philadelphia. Kamaal lists his early influences as funk, jazz, rock, pop, soul, blues and gospel. He was inspired by the music of Stanley Clarke and Bootsy Collins and was exposed to the bass guitar at an early age. During this time, he also began to write songs, fueling his desire to sing and play. That opportunity eventually came when he moved to Los Angeles. In LA, he pursued his career as a producer/songwriter/bassist, working with artists including Third World Lover, Donna Delory, CeCe Peniston, Chocolate Soul Genius, and hip-hop producer Sir Jinx.
Kamaal currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia where, for the past several years, his multimedia company, KM Entertainment, has created music and done mobile device development, graphic art, audio/video production and DVD authoring for various recording artists. KM Entertainment has also worked with film and TV clients, which include MTV’s Real World, Fox FX Networks, Coca Cola, NBA, Urban Entertainment and TBS.
