The Atlanta Women’s Foundation is dedicated to breaking the generational cycle of poverty for women and girls and to strengthening our community. When I was asked to lead the Foundation, the most compel- ling aspect of this opportunity was the critical impor- tance of the role we play in this community. Shane McDaniel (Mos Def) wants to be a star, and he'd do anything to succeed in the hip hop world. As his star begins to rise, a brush with death makes him realize that the values of gangsta rap might not be ones he wants to promote after all. But when he tries to clean up his act, cosmic forces intervene, reminding Shane that his material is no longer up to him since he did business with the devil; now he must fight to regain his power over his own artistic expression.
